Church of God's History

Purpose, Values, & Vision

ChristWay Church of God has been organized as a church for more than 74 years. The church first met in a home in the North Birmingham community in early 1935 as a group of people who got together to hold a prayer meeting. Later that same year in October, the church was organized in the home of Mr. Morgan Smith by Rev. Eugene Thomas with a membership of 14.
In 1936, Rev. C.M. Day built the first church building on Fairmont Hill in North Birmingham. The church worshiped in this building until 1945 when Rev. C.C. Dunnevant moved the church to 27th Street and 32nd Avenue North. Rev. Frank Johnson held tent revival meetings on the property located on 35th Street North with great success. A new church facility would later be built on this site in 1947. The church was dedicated in 1948 by State Overseer, J.T. Roberts with 36 in attendance for this service. The total membership was 41.
In 1953 a parsonage was built by the Pastor, Rev. J.T. Peoples. Later in 1957, Rev. A.N. Lee purchased an annex building, air conditioned and carpeted the church.  During Pastor Lee’s tenure, the church experienced solid growth and advancement.
In 1966, Pastor E.A. Ballenger remodeled the interior of the church, parsonage and annex. Air conditioning was added to the parsonage and annex at this time.
In March of 1977, the District Pastor, Rev. C.Y. Bussey met with the congregation to discuss the possibility of closing the North Birmingham Church. The congregation, under the leadership of Pastor R.O. Eubanks, voted to continue to meet as a church and to purchase property in Gardendale for relocation of the church.
In September 1977, Rev. F.R. Bryant was appointed Pastor and he initiated plans for the relocation of the Church to 801 Tarrant Road in Gardendale.  During construction, the Church began meeting in the Fultondale Public Library and later moved to Roger’s Vocational School.  The name of the Church was changed to Lynnwood Church of God in August 1978.
On September 23, 1979 the new building was dedicated. Pastor F.R. Bryant continued to serve as Pastor until 1983. Rev. Lee Brasher would serve as Pastor until 1987.
Rev. F.R. Bryant would return as Pastor in March 1987 and has continued to serve this congregation faithfully to the present.
In 1988, growth of the congregation caused the church to need additional space. An additional 2100 square feet was added to the Lynnwood facility.
In 1993, Pastor Bryant would lead an effort to build a new parsonage near the Lynnwood property. The new parsonage was completed and was paid in full shortly after construction.
In 1995, a total renovation of the Lynnwood building was undertaken. A complete “facelift” of the interior and exterior was completed.
Following the renovation project, it became clear that the current facility would not be adequate for the growth potential of the church. Pastor Bryant led the church to purchase a 2 acre tract in March of 1996. Later that same year, in June, an additional adjoining 1 acre tract was purchased.
As the congregation continued a steady pattern of growth, it became more evident that a new church facility would need to be built to accommodate the vision God had placed in the hearts of the Pastor and church. In October of 1999 an additional 2.1 acre tract was purchased to give the congregation a total of 5.16 acres in the heart of Gardendale.

In 2001, Pastor Bryant shared his vision with the congregation to build a new facility on the property that had been acquired. In early 2002, a meeting was set with John Anderson and Chuck Belcher of Anderson Belcher Construction Company concerning the possibility of building a new facility. Within a few months of this meeting an architect was hired to draw the plans for a new worship facility. The congregation of approximately 180 took on the new challenge with great fervor. Construction of the new facility began in September of 2002.
During construction of the Christian Life Center, a daycare wing was added to the plans. On Sunday, June 22, 2003 the Christian Life Center and Daycare were completed. The church would utilize this facility for all worship until a new sanctuary could be erected.
Upon completion of the Christian Life Center, the Church would experience phenomenal growth. What was designed to be a five-year construction plan would be revamped to a much faster paced project.
In 2004, the church would complete all of the on-site parking and excavation for the new sanctuary construction. The site was completed and made ready for construction of a sanctuary and commons.
In March of 2005, the church would erect an LED sign on the property to share its message with everyone who passed by.  Also, during 2005 the architectural design for the new sanctuary and commons was commenced.
On November 13, 2005, ChristWay Church took another colossal step of faith when ground was broken for the new sanctuary and commons that would adjoin the existing life center and daycare facilities.  This project was undertaken with much thought and consideration given to design and detail so as to house the congregation and make way for future growth of the church. On January 22, 2007, the first service in the new worship facilities was held.
The sanctuary includes seating for 1100 worshipers as well as state-of-the-art-sound, lighting and video systems. The new facility houses all of the church offices and also boasts a large choir rehearsal area for the growing needs of the music department.  A 6,000 square foot commons area equipped with a coffee and refreshment area was constructed to welcome everyone into the church campus.  This area also includes a large mezzanine meeting area for various church uses.  The total square footage of the new added facilities is 32,918 square feet bringing the total of usable floor area to 54,700 square feet.
To date, ChristWay Church has maintained a steady path of growth in all areas of ministry.  Today the church has many outreach ministries along with several small groups.  A thriving children’s and student ministry is well established.  The music department has surged in number and leads the congregation in worship each Sunday as well as produces seasonal music programs that are enjoyed by people from all over the region surrounding the church. There is active ministry to young adults as well as senior adults.  Every member of the family can receive ministry through this local church.
While ChristWay is truly focused on loving and caring for each other, the Church always maintains a mission mindset by supporting missionaries and ministries around the world.  Our current theme – Living, Giving, and Forgiving – established in 2008, is truly more than just a slogan at ChristWay.  It is the foundation upon which we are built and embraces everything that ChristWay is about.
